Austin, TX: I'll Be Your Tongue's Proxy

Austin has a diverse and varied culinary scene. It ranges from airstream trailers serving crepes to fine dining with views of the lake. Many Austinites dine at taco buses for lunch and enjoy hip downtown spots for dinner. We have James Beard nominated chefs, top quality sushi, the best Mexican food this side of the border, and incredible weekend brunch choices. In fact, we have so many options it would be nearly impossible to try them all. But that doesn't mean I won't attempt it.

This blog showcases one food fanatic's journey through Austin's epicurian landscape.

Restaurant Review #1: Don Luis Supertacos

What: Restaurant
When: August 25.2007
Where: Don Luis Supertacos (Parmer and Mopac)
What I had: 2 Chopped Beef Tacos on Flour, Sans Onions. 1 Fish Taco on Flour. Chips Salsa, water, and a free margarita on the rocks.

What I thought: This was my fourth venture to Mr. Luis' taco joint. I'll be completely honest. I could never dis-like a place like this. I always root for the underdog and even though every underdog has his downfall their brilliance in overcoming the odds more than makes up for it.

Although service can be spotty and it is rough to have to pay $2.50 for a basket of chips after the first complimentary basket their tacos can not be beat. By my fourth visit I had tried just about every taco they offer and had settled in on a steady favorite of the Chopped beef on flour, with a dash of lime & subtracted onions. This combination is superb. The meat is so tender and so flavorful. When wrapped in a fresh, homemade, crisp flour tortilla this will simply hit the spot. For only $2.25 on the al a carte menu it is possible I may never be able to tear myself away from the tacos to try the other items on the menu.

As for the items that aren't my "favorite": The Fish Taco I stole from my wife, she loves the fried cod they use. I myself am not enamored but find it to be an average fish taco but overall very satisfying. The chips are always crisp and the Hot Sauce...always spicy. It has a great flavor but be prepared to drink lots of water. The presentation is the best part of the Hot Sauce. It comes in your standard Salsa Dish with a dot of green sauce in the middle of the red. The Green packs the punch that eventually mixes in with the rest of the salsa to provide the fire. What about the free margarita you ask? Well, since Don Luis has yet to secure their liquor license they give away free margaritas (limit 2) on Thurs, Friday, and Saturday evenings. That in itself almost makes it worth the trip.

Although prices have increased a tad since my first trip and service has continually been spotty I can't give this place enough praise. To top it all of Mr. Luis is always there to great, check in, converse, and occasionally make a margarita or two for his customers.

Do yourself a favor and the next time you crave a good homemade taco, head the the land of the Supertaco.

Hopefully I will eventually get to try their breakfast tacos and famous enchiladas.

Pros: Cheap and Delicious Tacos. A friendly owner with an authentic environment. Free Margaritas.

Cons: Spotty Service, Extra chips and salsa costs extra

7/10
